Safety Issues and Metal Spinning

Metal spinning involves the process of shaping metal through use of a rotating machine, such as a lathe or a mill. This process can be individually performed or computer-guided through CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology. CNC can more precisely cut metal and is used by many commercial manufacturers. Artisans will often spin metal discs and tubes themselves as this indicates to the customer that more individual attention is paid to each item. If you are spinning metal by hand be sure not to touch the spinning metal piece before it turns over. This means that the piece has been rolled into a rounded edge so that the bare edge of stock is now protected. Plastic lathe shields and hand guards are also recommended for DIY metal spinning.
