Metal spinning is a process in which a flat piece of metal is turned (or spun) on a lathe around a pattern, thus causing the metal to form a specific or desired shape. Metal spinning is used in instances where a need for a three dimensional shape formed using only a single piece of material exists. Examples of this would be cones, bells, or hemispheres. The benefit of metal spinning are a product that is stronger structurally and more rigid. Usually metal spinning is performed by hand for the purpose of creating decorative items. It is also performed by CNC machines such as a lathe when exactness and high levels of precision are necessary. Metal spinning is performed both on a commercial basis and by artisans.
